Round the House concerts present a dynamic mixture of songs and lively dance music including Irish jigs, reels, hornpipes, and polkas. Claire’s compelling vocals partner equally well with traditional and contemporary arrangements of Irish songs, which are interspersed with spirited instrumental tune sets.
Our concerts combine solo performances and tune variations with the dense unison of melody so characteristic of Irish traditional music. Sharon’s fiddling contributes melody and variation to the dance tunes and texture to song accompaniment. Dave’s articulate picking on the mandolin, bouzouki, and banjo, brings drive and rhythm as well as an additional layer of melody to the tunes. Mark’s guitar and bouzouki add tasteful accompaniment to the songs, and he, as well as Claire and Dave on the bodhran, provide the rhythmic foundation of our music.
Our music takes center stage, but there is always a sense of fun and spontaneity at our concerts. Each of us is comfortable and inviting as we play, sing, and chat during our shows. In the festival setting, we present a program that flows neatly together, so that audiences get variety even in a short amount of time. In a more relaxed concert setting, we have time to talk and create a sense of being in the living room enjoying an evening of music together.
We often welcome Irish step dancers to the stage as participants in our concerts. Since 2000, Round the House has collaborated on numerous occasions with the Bracken School of Irish Dance to create an evening of music and dance.
